West Humberstone Gospel Mission

Founders

"Mr & Mrs Brown were the founders of this chapel, it was first started in someone's front room, it grew that much they decided to buy the land on which it stands now. The foundation stone was laid by Mr Brown in the year 1896. But of course he could not run it by himself, they had to form committees, elect trustees, etc. There was Mr Turner, Mr Glover, Earnie Wynne's father, Mr Darby senior, Mr Leach and several others. I was born in 1909 and started going to Sunday School at the age of three which would be 1912. Mr & Mrs Brown were a lovely couple, everyone liked them, I remember them quite clearly, he had white hair and a white beard, very kind, Mrs Brown used to wear a long black dress, black shawl and a black bonnet with beads on it and tied with a ribbon in a bow under her chin. Most ladies dressed liked this it made them look older than they really were."
